Red, White, and Boozy Popsicles

Yes, you read that title correctly. This recipe, or rather, double recipe, contains alcohol. The truth is, it’s the 4th of July, and there are a lot of fun drink recipes out there — but they can get sugary and loaded with weird ingredients you can’t pronounce pretty quickly. I figured I’d show you a fun, less sugar-filled, some-what healthy (minus the alcohol), way to have a cocktail this holiday.

Why popsicles? Why not? Popsicles are easy to make and a great way to cool down in that hot summer heat.

And alcohol. Ahh, yes, I know, you’re probably wondering why I’m including alcohol on my health coaching blog. Well, the truth is, I like a good cocktail! And I don’t see that as a bad thing. Everything in moderation, especially alcohol.

And when it comes to alcohol, there are “healthier” choices you can make. For instance: sticking to clear liquors like vodkas and clear or blanco tequilas significantly lowers the amount of sugar you’re intaking. It also calls for less ingestion of yeast. Yeast doesn’t effect everyone the same way, but for me, yeast came up on a food intolerance test I took a few years ago so I try to keep my yeast intake pretty low. Wine, whiskey, and beer have the highest yeast content of any alcohol. Again, anything clear, like vodka or a clear or blanco tequila, has a very minimal yeast content.

Another trick is to not mix your liquor with sugar. Alcohol already metabolizes as sugar, so adding a sugary juice or soda to it is cause for a toxic overload on your liver. I usually mix vodka or clear tequila with either water or club soda and a splash of juice. Recently, my splash of juice has been grapefruit. Try it! It’s delicious.

Anyways, what are your 4th of July plans? My roommates and I are having our traditional potluck brunch with friends before heading to the beach for the rest of the day. We already ate these pops over the weekend (oops), so they won’t be making an appearance, but some healthy red, white, and blue smoothies will be.

  2. Pour into popsicle molds.
