Nut Milk Bag! HA! I know, I know, I know, the name is ridiculous. But they make dairy-free milk making very easy. I purchased mine at WholeFoods, but there are plenty on Amazon. Think, a cheese cloth without as much of a mess.
This Homemade Hemp Milk recipe is really a base for any dairy-free milk. Instead of hemp seeds you could sub almonds, sunflowers, oats, or shredded coconut. And it only takes 5 minutes to make.
What???
Seriously. 5 minutes.
And guess what else? No fillers like Guar Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Sunflower or Soy Lecithin, Gellan Gum, Xantham Gum, Carrageenan, Cane Sugar, etc. Most of these gums are derived from either beans or corn, with Carrageenan being derived from sea weed and being a known inflammatory causing agent. I started becoming very interested in these fillers a few years ago during my first elimination diet when I found out I had an intolerance to all beans via a blood test. I found after a few months of eliminating all beans, including some of these fillers, I would become a bit bloated after drinking store-bought dairy-free milk alternatives. I then realized how easy and how much cheaper making your own at home is.
Hemp seeds are high in omega 3’s, helping to offset our current diet of too many omega 6-omega 3 ratio, making this a great anti-inflammatory drink. Hemp seeds also lack any phytic acid, which tend to cause gastrointestinal problems in some, making them paleo-friendly. Phytic acid is the paleo argument against beans, legumes, and grains.

HOMEMADE HEMP MILK Serves 4 | Time: 5 mins
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup Hemp Seeds
4 cups Filtered Water
Optional:
1 Tbs Maple Syrup
1 tsp Pink Himalayan Sea Salt
Combine all ingredients in blender. I use a Vitamix.
Blend for 60 seconds, or until hemp seeds seem liquified.
Strain through either a nut milk bag (I bought mine at WholeFoods) or cheese cloth. You really don’t have to strain anything, but it will make for a significantly less grainy taste.
Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.
Serve chilled! I use mine in smoothies, oatmeal, and breakfast quinoa.

Really, the base of this recipe is the hemp seeds and water. Anything additional is a flavor preference. I personally don’t usually sweeten my milk because I don’t mind the earthy flavor and I’m usually not drinking it without the addition of a fruit, however, by itself you may want to add a bit of maple syrup, honey, or even dates.
To make a vanilla version, add 1 tsp of vanilla. To make it chocolatey, add 1 Tbs of cacao.
